# HuddleUp Team Messaging

> Built-in team messaging in HuddleUp Sports powered by Stream Chat. Dedicated channels per team, slash commands for carpools and polls, emoji reactions, and admin controls.

HuddleUp includes built-in team messaging so you don't have to rely on group texts or separate chat apps.

## How Team Chat Works

Each team has a dedicated chat channel powered by Stream Chat. All coaches and parents on the team can see and send messages — keeping team communication in one place.

## Accessing Chat

1. Go to the **Chats** tab in the bottom navigation
2. Select your team channel
3. Type your message and send

**What you see depends on your role:**

* **Parents** see only the channels for teams their children are on
* **Coaches** see channels for all teams they manage
* **Admins** have visibility into all channels across their organization

## Sending Messages

* Type a message and tap send
* **React** to messages with emoji reactions (long-press on any message)
* **Typing indicators** show when someone is composing a message

## Slash Commands

HuddleUp includes custom slash commands for common team coordination. Type these in any team chat:

| Command | What It Does |
| ---------- | ------------------------------------------- |
| `/carpool` | Coordinate rides to games and practices |
| `/snack` | Organize snack duty rotation |
| `/poll` | Create a quick poll for the team to vote on |
| `/cheer` | Send a team cheer or encouragement |

<Tip>
Slash commands are great for recurring coordination. Use `/snack` at the start of the season to set up a rotation, or `/carpool` before away games to organize rides.
</Tip>

## Who Can Message

* **Coaches** can message the entire team
* **Parents** can participate in team chat
* All messages are visible to everyone in the channel

## Managing Chat (Admins & Coaches)

Coaches and admins have additional controls:

* **Enable/disable chat** — Toggle team messaging on or off per team (in team settings or during team creation)
* **Visibility** — Admins can see all team channels in their organization
* **Content monitoring** — Review conversations to ensure appropriate communication

To toggle chat for a team:

1. Go to the **Team** page
2. Tap **Team Settings**
3. Toggle **Team Messaging** on or off

## Push Notifications

Parents and coaches receive push notifications for new chat messages. To manage chat notification settings:

1. Go to **Settings** > **Notifications**
2. Toggle team message notifications on or off
3. You can customize notification settings per team

See [Notifications](/docs/families/notifications) for all notification options.

## Tips

* Use messaging for quick updates that don't warrant a full event change
* Important schedule changes should still be made via [event edits](/docs/coaches/scheduling-events) (which trigger push notifications to all families)
* Keep the chat friendly and on-topic — it's visible to all team parents
